Season�s Wrap-Up, Next Year Awaits

Thursday, October 8, 2009 (Mentor, OH)--With the State Sectional Tournament completed, the Mentor Cardinals look forward to next season. Only one year has passed since a 2008 senior laden team graduated and their hopes for a fifth straight state tournament appearance (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007) for them fell short by a mere four strokes at Pine Hills. Senior Mike Guarino (76) was the only player that survived at Pine Hills and qualified for the state tournament. Mike finished tied for 27th in the state for Division I in 2008 (http://ohsaa.org/sports/go/boys/2008/bd1ind08.pdf) at the Ohio State’ Scarlet Golf Course. The 2010 team will be again, a senior laden group with aspirations of qualifying for the state tournament in Columbus. The 2009 Golf Team made great strives this season by winning an unprecedented eleventh consecutive Lake Erie League Championship. The Cardinals won the championship by going undefeated in conference match play and performing well at the LEL Tournament at Fowler’s Mill with a 322 team total, 40 strokes better than second place Shaker Heights at 362. The Cardinals were led Junior Cory Vinborg (77), the tournament medalist, and the Cardinals also got consistent play by Junior Alex Urbanscik (81), Sophomore Allan Poe (82), Junior Joe Hess (82), Junior Cody Gunton (82), and Junior Matt Ranney (83). Unfortunately, the 2009 Team was eliminated from the state tournament on Monday at Stonewater by a mere stroke. However, the good news is that the golf team will have everyone back for next season. As for now the team will have to wait until next August when the Mentor Cardinals will start their 2010 season at the Brunswick Invitational set for Pine Hills Golf Course in Hinckley.

Cardinals finish 6th at Stonewater Sectional

Tuesday, October 6, 2009 (Highland Heights, Ohio)--The 2009 Northeast Ohio Division I Sectional at StoneWater Golf Club is in the books and the Mentor Cardinals finished in 6th place. Individually, the Cards were led by Sophomore Allan Poe (80) with a fine round and he was the low medalist for Mentor. Other Mentor scores include Junior Cory Vinborg (83), Junior Alex Urbanscik (84), and Junior Matt Ranney (86) completed the scoring for the Cardinals. Division I Sectional Set for Stonewater GC today
Monday, October 5, 2009 (Highland Heights, OH)—The weather has been cool, drizzly, and damp but the 2009 Northeast Ohio Division I Sectional is scheduled for today at the Stonewater Golf Club. There will be twenty (20) local teams, including our Mentor Cardinals, competing for four (4) qualifying team spots and four (4) individual spots on non-qualifying teams. This is just one (1) of five (5) sectionals being played this week at various courses throughout Northeast Ohio. Below is the list of teams participating in today’s event. Tee times start at 8:00 a.m. on both the 1st and 10th tees:

Cardinals Finish 2nd at Northeast Ohio Invitational
Concord, OH (Sunday, September 27, 2009)--The Mentor Cardinals put together a strong performance and finished second to Bay Village in the 2009 NEO Invitational played yesterday on a very wet and soggy Little Mountain CC course. Bay Village won the event with a team score of 307, edging the Cardinals by 4 strokes. Mentor shot a team score of 311 and the Cards were led by Sophomore Allan Poe (76) and Junior Cory Vinborg (76). Junior Micah Stein (78) was two strokes back and Junior Joe Hess (81) completed the team scoring for Mentor. The Cardinals will have next week to prepare for the State Sectionals at Stonewater CC scheduled for Monday, October 5. Complete team results are listed below:

Chesterland, OH--(Friday, September 25, 2009)--And the beat goes on! For the 11th consecutive year the Mentor Cardinals are the Lake Erie League Champions. Led by Junior Cory Vinborg (77), the Cardinals dominated the 2009 Lake Erie League Tournament by shooting a team score of 322, outdistancing second place Shaker Heights by 40 strokes. Mentor also got consistent play by Alex Urbanscik (81), Allan Poe (82), Joe Hess (82), and Cody Gunton (82) to complete the scoring. One stroke back was Matt Ranney (83). The Cards are in action again this Saturday at the NEO Invitational, starting at 1:00 p.m. at Little Mountain CC.

Stow, Solon Topple Cardinals in Close Quad Match
Highland Heights, OH (Thursday, September 24, 2009)--On a golf course where the State Sectional Tournament will be held next month, the Mentor Cardinals lost a very close quad match to Stow (162), Solon (164), and beat Geneva (182). Mentor (166) was right in the middle of things and got a solid performance by sophomore, Allan Poe (39) with a 4-over par round at Stonewater Golf Club on Wednesday. Juniors Alex Urbanscik (42) and Cory Vinborg (42) were next, followed by Matt Ranney (43), who completed the scoring for the Cards. The Cardinals will be in action again today at Fowler's Mill Golf Course for the 2009 Lake Erie League Tournament. Complete team results and Mentor scores are listed below:

Cardinals Start Big Week with a Split
Hinckley, OH--(Wednesday, September 23, 2009)--Led by Junior Cory Vinborg (39), the Mentor Cardinals split their tri-match yesterday at Pine Hills. Mentor lost to Strongsville 158-163 but won against Brunswick 163-169. Sophomore Alan Poe (40), Junior Alex Urbancsik (41), and Junior Joe Hess (43) completed the scoring for the Cards. The Cardinals will be in action again today at Stonewater Golf Club in a quad match against Stow, Geneva, and Solon. Tee time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Complete team results and Mentor scores are listed below:

Cardinals Prepare for a Big Week
Mentor, OH (Sunday, September 20, 2009)—Autumn officially arrives Tuesday, which coincidently corresponds with the first day of a big week set for the Mentor Cardinals. On Tuesday, the Cardinals travel to Pine Hills, the site of 2009 Northeast Ohio District Golf Tournament, to play Brunswick and Strongsville in an independent tri-match. One day later, the Cardinals are at Stonewater Golf Club, the site of the 2009 State Sectional Golf Tournament, to play Solon, Stow, and Geneva in an important quad match. On Thursday, the Cardinals travel to Fowler's Mill to play in the Lake Erie League Tournament. The Cardinals successfully finished up their LEL match schedule last week and won all their league matches again this year. On Saturday, the Cardinals finish up their busy week with the Northeast Ohio Tournament at Little Mountain CC. Another quality field is slated for this event too, starting at 1:00 p.m. The Cardinals will get relief starting next week, with a week to prepare for the State Sectionals slated for Monday, October 5. So as the autumn season officially begins this week, so does Championship Week begins for the Cardinals--we wish them luck!

Mentor finishes 6th at Kent Invitational
Kent, OH (Sunday, September 13th)--The Mentor Cardinals finished 6th at the Kent Roosevelt Invitational with a team score of (326-330=656) for the two-day event, which ended on Saturday with Mentor scoring a team score of 330. The Cardinals were led again by Cory Vinborg (75-79=154) with a 79 at Twin Lakes CC. The team scores and Mentor individual scores are listed below:
