Mentor Golf Coach Retires

Longtime Mentor Golf Coach George Polinsky Retires after 30 Years at the Helm

Wednesday, December 22, 2010 (Mentor, OH)—After three decades as the Head Golf Coach for Mentor High School, veteran golf coach George Polinsky has retired from coaching.  After retiring from teaching in 2009, Coach Polinsky came back to co-coach with Coach Bender this past season to complete his 30th year of coaching for Mentor High School. During his tenure his teams won 25 conference championships divided between the Greater Cleveland Conference (11, 1980-1992) and the Lake Erie League Conference (14, 1993-2008 and 2010).  During these years, Coach Polinsky has compiled an outstanding dual match record.  His dual match record stands at 464-50-9.  His teams have won 5 Sectional Championships, 3 District Championships, and 6 qualifying experiences at the OHSAA State Championships in Columbus.  Coach Polinsky has always been an advocate of the game of golf for all players. He served as the golf instructor for the city of Mentor from 1982-2001 where he was involved in teaching this great game to over 1200 Mentor residents.  Coach Polinsky ran a number of junior varsity and varsity invitational tournaments around greater Cleveland for over 40 schools for many years.  This past season alone he sponsored tournaments at the Stonewater Golf Club, Little Mountain Golf Club, and Black Brook Golf Course. Between 1990 and 2005 Coach Polinsky was the Chairman in charge of the junior golf clinics for the Ben Hogan, Nike, Buy.com and Nationwide Golf Tour events held in Cleveland at the Quail Hollow and Stonewater Country Clubs.  The 2010 Golf team won their 12 consecutive LEL Championship, finished second at the State Sectionals and senior, Cory Vinborg, qualified for the Division I Boys State Golf Tournament. We wish Coach Polinsky good luck and Happy Retirement and for him to continue to hit the ball straight down the middle of the fairway!

. . . .Not in the Cards for Mentor’s State Qualifier

Mentor's State Medalist Cory Vinborg tees off on the 10th Hole for the start of his second round at the Division I State Golf Championship. Vinborg would go on to post a round of 89 for a two-day total of 173.

Cory Vinborg shoots 84-89=173 for Two-Day Total Score

October 23, 2010 (Columbus, OH)—Cory Vinborg started off his second round with accurate drive in the fairway on the Par 4 10th hole at the Scarlet Golf Course, just as he did on Hole 9, his last hole for the day, but things just did not work out the way he planned in the middle.  Cory double-bogeyed his first two holes and he never got started on the right foot, shooting 46-43=89 for a 2-day total of 173, tying for 56th place individually and 29 strokes behind Tournament Medalist and  State Champion, Michael Ricaurte, Columbus St. Charles with rounds of 71-73=144.  St. Charles also won the team State Championship with a two day total of 610, outdistancing second place Cleveland St. Ignatius by 11 stokes.

Cardinal Chirping Notes:  When the field teed-off this morning at 9:00 a.m. the temperature rose to a balmy 51 degrees in Columbus, almost 20 degrees warmer than yesterday when the first round was delayed by 1 hour because of frost.   Cory Vinborg finished his second round today with a great drive on Hole 9 and a nice iron to the front middle of the green and he then proceeded to just leave his birdie putt short in front of the hole and eventually he tapped in for a Par 4 to finish his round on a good note.  Congratulations to Cory, who finished his career today as a two-time State Qualifier for Mentor and he is only the 2nd Mentor High Golfer ever to qualify as an individual.  Cory qualified with his team in 2007, his freshman year.

Cory Vinborg Completes His First Round at State Tournament

Vinborg shoots 40-44=84 for his first round score

Friday, October 22, 2010 (Columbus, OH)–The first round of the 2010 Division I Boys State Golf Championship is in the books and Senior Cory Vinborg shot a first round score of 84, 13 strokes behind tournament leader and medalist for the first day, Michael Ricaurte, Columbus St. Charles, 71, even par round.  Cory Vinborg got off to a good start, after bogeying the first hole, he saved pars on Hole 3 and 4 and was only 1-over par going into Hole 7.  But Vinborg double-bogeyed the short Par 4 7th by hitting his utility wood into the fairway bunker and then found his iron shot in the greenside bunker on the same hole.  After making a nice par on the Par 3 8th Hole, he bogeyed Hole 9 for a round of 40 on his first nine.  On his back nine, Cory Vinborg again made a great save for par on the Par 4 10th hole but he struggled with his iron play on his back nine, dropping 5 shots to par on his final three holes and settling for an 84 score for his first round play.  Vinborg will tee off for the Mentor Cardinals tomorrow at 9:48 on Hole 10.

Cardinal Chirping Notes: The first round of today’s tournament was delayed for one hour due to frost.  Tomorrow morning temperatures will not be as cold, the forecast is predicting lows only in the mid forties for the start of play at 9:00 a.m. Also Northeast Ohio schools are struggling too with St. Ignatius and Medina, 16 and 17 strokes behind respectively tournament leader, Columbus St. Charles; while Stow and Uniontown Lake, are 28 and 29 shots behind respectively with one round to go.   Team tournament results are listed below:

Tough Test Awaits Division I Golfers

The Scarlet Course is Ready for Tomorrow’s Play

Thursday, October 20, 2010 (Columbus, OH)–A very tough test awaits Mentor Senior Cory Vinborg and the rest of the field for tomorrow 85th Annual Boys Golf Tournament at Ohio Sate University Scarlet Golf Course.  At today’s practice round, the 72 player field were greeted to swirling winds, cool conditions, very  firm fairways, slick undulating greens, and very difficult pin positions.  One player commented that the conditions are so dry it is like “putting on a pool table“, once you get the balling rolling it is very hard to stop it.  Central Ohio has had very little rain this fall and combined with a dry and very warm summer, the playing conditions will test the skills and patience of each and every player.  Cory Vinborg is scheduled to tee off at 9:40 a.m. on the first tee for tomorrow’s first round of this championship.  We wish him the best!
